It’s not every day that an award-winning novelist asks me to be in conversation with them during the book launch of their new novel. In fact, it’s never happened before. But on June 6, from 7 to 8 p.m, I’ll be in conversation with Brian Duren during his debut reading of “Ivory Black” at Subtext Books in downtown Saint Paul, Minnesota.
Because the novel’s protagonist is a painter, the hat (or beret) I’ll be wearing is that of an expert on fine-art painting.
After Brian reads excerpts from his novel, he and I will have a conversation about some art-related aspects of the book. Then there will be a Q&A session with the audience. Afterwards, Brian will sign books.
Subtext is located at 6 West 5th Street, which is 2.1 miles away from a house on Summit Avenue where author F. Scott Fitzgerald once lived. In fact, there are rumors that F. Scott’s ghost has been spotted attending book readings at Subtext. Since those rumors were started by me, they’re probably not true, but you should stop by and see for yourself.
